The countdown is on to the kickoff of the largest FIFA World Cup in history later this summer, and residents can watch that countdown in person now through late March.
As KVOE News reported Friday, Emporia has been selected as a host site for the official FIFA World Cup countdown clock, which is currently sitting outside of William L. White Auditorium. During an interview with KVOE News, Visit Emporia Director Matt Fowler stated the clock’s presence in town is exciting for several reasons, namely that it is bringing the FIFA experience to residents.
Fowler adds that the clock’s arrival comes at a perfect time for the community, with various major activities getting set to take place over the next several weeks.
The FIFA clock will remain at White Auditorium until March 26th and has already made its way across several Kansas communities in recent months. Fowler says the clock will be just one of many FIFA experience events planned within Emporia in the coming months.
Exact details are still being finalized; however, Fowler says Visit has been working with other local entities to develop activities, watch parties and more during the World Cup season.
The FIFA World Cup, which will feature 48 teams from around the world for the first time in history, will be played across locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11th through July 19th.
Included in the list of host sites is Kansas City, which will host six World Cup matches inside Arrowhead Stadium. Matches will include Argentina vs Algeria, Tunisia vs Netherlands, Ecuador vs Curacao and Algeria vs Austria, as well as one match in the round of 32 and the World Cup quarter-finals.
