DARAMSUQ — In response to ongoing killings targeting Alawites across several regions of Syria under the pretext of labeling them as remnants of the “fallen Syrian regime,” the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the Diaspora issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it described as “a policy of collective intimidation and systematic killings carried out by the de facto authorities and their affiliated factions in Syria’s coastal areas and Homs province.”
The Council firmly rejected the use of the term “remnants” by the authorities as a justification for the killing and intimidation of Alawite civilians.
It further emphasized that the events of the past year have demonstrated “there is no evidence of any so-called remnants in the areas populated by Alawites, and no violent activities have been carried out by members of the Alawite community in response to the abuses being perpetrated against them.” On the contrary, the statement stressed that Alawites have remained committed to peaceful civil resistance in pursuit of their legitimate rights, whether through peaceful protests or civil sit-ins.

The Council’s statement also addressed the actions of the Syrian government, stating:
“This authority has recently intensified its repressive policies toward the Alawites, adopting an escalatory and provocative approach, as seen recently in the countryside of Jableh. This move appears to be an attempt to provoke them into retaliatory violence, thereby covering up the brutal massacres committed by factions linked to the de facto authority on 7 March of last year, which targeted thousands of Alawite civilians.”
The statement accused the authorities of pressuring the families of victims to alter their testimonies in an effort to obscure the facts and promote narratives that justify the alleged crimes. It cited the case of Nabil Yusuf, known as Abu Alaa, who was reportedly urged to change his account in exchange for the return of the victims’ bodies.
The Council called on the international community and states engaged in Syrian affairs to intensify pressure on the authorities to meet their obligations to all Syrians and to advance a political solution consistent with UN Resolutions 2254 and 2799. It said such a settlement should pave the way for a decentralized federal constitution, the formation of a genuine national federal government, and free elections under international supervision to ensure fair representation and the protection of the rights and dignity of all Syrians.
